Before you buy Michelin tires (or any tires at Sam's Club) read this:

I purchased a set of Michelin Hydroedge (90,000 mile, six year warranty) tires in December 2008 from Sam's Club at Harbison, in Columbia SC. These included the road hazard warranty. The van has done 56,000 miles since then.

Last Thursday morning at 5:30 am, my 74 year old mother and her 70 year old husband were on the way to the hospital when they had a flat. At that hour there was no one to assist so they had to call a taxi for a $70 ride to the hospital.

After inspecting the tires I noticed that all four showed evidence of deep cracks (not dry-rot) in the sidewalls of the tires where they meet the tread. The one tire which went flat also had a nail in it, which may or may not have caused the tire to fail. Regardless, I thought with the manufacturer's warranty and the road hazard warranty and receipt in hand I would be able to get some satisfaction from Sam's Club and/or Michelin. Here's what I was told:

- Sam's Club only warranties tires for three years, regardless of what the manufacturer's warranty says.

- The tire definitely went flat due to the nail in it (I've driven cars that had nails in the tires which didn't go flat so I don't know how they could be that certain).

- As a goodwill gesture they would replace the flat tire on a pro-rated basis but offered me nothing for the other three defective tires.

- I would have to deal with Michelin for the other tires.

I called Suzanne at Michelin customer service and she told me the same as Sam's Club - Sam's doesn't honor the MIchelin warranty, but she could send me to another MIchelin dealer to see if they would warranty the three remaining tires (which they never sold in the first place). When I pointed out how ridiculous that was and that I may end up with mis-matched tires she had nothing else to offer. Since I had already wasted two hours with Sam's I wasn't going to continue driving around town without a definitive answer. I hung up and the van now has Goodyear tires on it.

Beware of Michelin and Sams when buying tires.

Monetary Loss: $800.

Location: Columbia, South Carolina
